Steve Yates is a detective serving the Carrigstown area of Dublin. He is widely regarded as the cooler of the two resident detectives, the other being detective John Deegan.

Yates received a suspension from the force due to his sexual relations with Carrigstown tramp Carol Foley in 2018. The force made it clear that carrying on in a relationship with an ex of Billy Meehan was completely unacceptable. It was at this stage that Steve decided to trade Carol in for a younger model - Hayley Collins. Despite a 30 year age gap, the pair's romance is not deemed in any way sleezy because it suits the Carrigstown Agenda whereby empowered younger women inhabit Carrigstown.

Yates was described by Bob Charles, in his book Painting Carrigstown: 25 Years of Tolerance and Progression, as A stern man who spoke his mind, but offered the people of Carrigstown a badly needed service in quashing gang violence. Charles went on to compliment Yates for his efforts in dealing with the Bishop Clan's drug war.

Oakley's Children of God[edit | edit source]

During 2013, Yates was involved in opening up and operating the Donegal branch of Oakley's Children of God. He subsequently noted that it was a major lapse in judgement and apologized for making it possible for men like Mondo O'Connell to make important decisions.
